How to get value from a room full of strangers

A practical guide to working a WTO (UK) reception — who to meet, what to ask, and what to do in the seventy-two hours afterwards.

The most common mistake at a business reception is treating it as a distribution exercise. Handing out thirty cards produces nothing. Three real conversations produce introductions that last years.

Arrive early. The first forty minutes of any WTO (UK) reception are the most useful — the room is quiet enough to talk properly, and the people who arrive early are usually the ones who came to do business.

Ask what someone is trying to build this year rather than what they do. It moves the conversation from job title to problem, and problems are where partnerships start.

Then follow up inside seventy-two hours with something specific: an introduction, a document, an answer. Our members consistently report that the introductions which turned into contracts all began with a follow-up that carried something useful in it.
